Carol Sue Firman Stevenson died at her home in Otterbein, Indiana on July 17, 2020. Carol was born in Lakewood, Ohio on August 12, 1937. She graduated from Lakewood High School in 1955 and attended Bowling Green State University with a degree in Physical Education in 1959. She earned a Masters Degree in Counseling and Guidance from Indiana University in 1980.

On July 26, 1958 she married her college sweetheart, Jim Stevenson from Clyde, Ohio. They would have been married for 62 years 7/26/2020. Carol is survived by her husband Jim who lives in Otterbein, IN; a daughter Karen who lives in Brooklyn, NY, a son James who lives in Albuquerque, sister Janice Polen in Bellingham, WA, and four grandsons..

Carol was a successful NCAA Division I coach and USA National Coach. She held a number of leadership positions in both organizations. She served as Head Women's Coach at the USA World University Games in 1989 in Duisberg Germany. She was recognized as a Master Coach by the USA Track and Field for her many contributions to the sport of track and field and as an educator of coaches.

She served as Head Women's Track and Cross Country Coach at Indiana University from 1980-1989. She coached the NCAA Division I individual winner for both the 1987 and 1988 seasons. She served as Head Women's Coach at Purdue University from 1989-1993. She retired from coaching in 1993 and then served as the academic advisor for Purdue Men's Basketball from 1994-1998. From 1998-2001 she served as academic advisor to Purdue Men's Football. She retired from Purdue Athletics in 2002.

At Indiana University Carol was the Big 10 Coach of the Year in Cross Country in 1987 and Big Ten Coach of the Year for Indoor Track in 1988. She was named Coach of the Year for the NCAA District IV in 1987 and 1988. She served as President of NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Coaches and Vice President of Division I Women's Track Coaches. While at Purdue she was selected to serve on the NCAA Track and Field Committee until she retired from coaching.

The family wishes memorial contributions be made to Indiana Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.
